Despair-ate Housewife

We are the greatest nation in the world. We are THE superpower to be reckoned with.

Or are we the laughing stock of the world where third world leaders mock us on our own soil?

The answer is obvious and we've no one to blame but ourselves for WE are the ones who have allowed the culture of corruption to take hold and strangle us. Granted, this is not the first administration to be so plagued. What is most troublesome, however, is that with each administration the problem escalates. If Social Security and Medicare are "entitlements" for we mere citizens then it would seem corruption and the accompanying pass would be the "entitlements" for every man and woman we elect to our legislative bodies.

It seems fitting this administration is headed by a Texan. What once was a wonderful, satirical ode to governmental excesses has become a world reality in the guise of the musical "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas". After all, under this Texan's leadership, the Administration has done its utmost to prostitute nearly everything good and just this country has stood for. In one memorable scene from the show the Governor (coincidence?) sings the following ditty :

"I’ll continue to stand tall,
You can trust me,
For I promise,
I shall keep a watchful eye upon ya'll,
Ooo I love to dance a little sidestep,
Now they see me, now they don't,
I’ve come and gone,
AND Oooo I love to sweep around the wide step,
Cut a little swathe and lead the people on.”

The lead in what is tolerable behavior must come from those in authority. What are we to think when truth is obfuscated and spun by zealot like talking heads out for the bucks they make? What are we to think when retired Generals come forward to refute what they were not allowed to voice while serving? What are we to think when journalists like Bob Woodward realize they've perhaps been duped?

What are we to think when after the Delay, Abramoff, Cunningham and Jefferson episodes have quieted down even more abhorrent behavior comes to light and the leadership STILL tries to play the blame game to escape responsibility? The Foley affair is NOT about Gay members of Congress. It is about power and the willingness to misuse it for political gain - at the expense of the citizens who horored them with those positions. Not just Congressional Pages. Every man, woman and child in this country. It just happens to be the scandal of the week.

What are we to think when personalities from offbeat sources like "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" are the ones who have had it right from day one? Like us.

What are we to think when racial slurs are used by Presidential hopefuls and they claim to have made up the word? And what are we to think when opposition to torture loses for politcal expediency. Even the vaunted John McCain has sold out. The plan accepted is as bad, if not worse, than the one the Administration put forth. But then there are those Presidential ambitions to consider.

That little island of fall color from yesterday's post? Look for me to be buried under it if this keeps up. Be very careful this November. Don't let a last minute "blizzard" of negative campaigning "snow" you!

Oh yes. The inscription on the stone will read "Succumbed to an overdose of insults to her intelligence".

There is hope. We allowed it to happen - we can stop it. Watching Bill Moyer tonight. Incredible that the truth of corruption lies so close yet so few find it until too late - hiding in plain sight.

Unfortunately, I wish the US was only the "laughing stock". The worst thing is that it is probably the most feared, not only by the rest of the world but increasingly by its own citizens.

Sad state of affairs, iff'n ya ask me, which you didn't... but there it is anyway.

I make a special effort to remove myself as much as possible from US politics, mostly because the games are so bloody transparent anymore that it's not worth the brain time to play along.

Love your blogs! Cool concept.. Dogwalk Musings. :) The world might be a very different place if we discussed at length what we think about while walking the dogs. LOL

Well said. I would only add, and pay special attention to the voting machines.
