With Friends Like These...

Hamas lobs missiles into Israel. Israel retaliates with air strikes. People die. If not killed instantly, their deaths can be agonizing. Many are women and children. Why? A dispute over land. Each seems determined to annihilate the other. Nice neighbors.

Here in the 'hood if one neighbor doesn't like another they pretty much ignore one another, knowing full well neither is likely to change. Maybe nations should take a lesson from neighborhoods.

Frankly I'm tired of the whole mid east mess. We cannot negotiate nor legislate that they like one another. The history is too sordid and deep. You'd think we would learn. It's tough to sit back and watch it without your blood boiling no matter where your sympathies lie. Maybe it's time, though, that we do just that.

It's always the Israelis against everyone else yet no one has the guts to stand up and point out their part in the conflicts. In particular the establishment of illegal settlements in the West Bank and cutting off life lines to Gaza. Why is it that they are always the victim and no one else can lay claim?

It concerns me that we pour billions of dollars into Israel because they are such a strong "ally". Yet we turn a blind eye when they blatantly use those dollars in counter productive actions against everyone else in the region. What, exactly, have we received in return for that aid to warrant calling them "ally"?

Everyone else in the region is accused of wanting to drive Israel out of existence. Remember they are the ones threatening military action against Iran and guess who they'll expect to come to their aid? Us. As in U.S. They have a stronger, better armed military than any of it's neighbors. Is it not time to let them fend for themselves? They resist all our efforts for peace talks, they rattle their sabres with great abandon and they are as guilty as their adversaries of killing hundreds and thousands of people who are guilty of nothing more than the unfortunate fate of living in the region.

Both sides have their arguments. Neither are totally justified. Neither will compromise.

It's time for it to end. Full stop. A lasting full stop. Or hit them where it hurts the most. In the pocketbook. Oh, and in the spirit of the season, this is hardly what I'd consider the Holy Land. It's more like Dante's Inferno.

I totally agree....have for quite some time thought we should just let them go and let the piece fall where they may, they have stood behind our skirts too long. It is time for us to step to the side.

And if the people who live in the USA of that nationality..want to howl..let them go back and help.

Ally's don't run in stir the pot, throw bombs, and then run behind us.

I'm pretty sure the whole world would be better off if we all just listened to our mothers and minded our own business, and let others simply be.

You are right and this is a brave post. You say what a lot of people think but are afraid to say. This is especially true of our "fearless" politicians.

Thank you all. I expected a lot of flak for this post. I'm glad I'm in such good company - those not afraid to speak their mind.

Everyone seems to forget that in 1948 the UN mandated, by legal world vote, that the State of Israel had the right to exist as a soverign nation. It is the Arab world that has refused to accept that mandate. The Isaraelis have a right to their homeland and a right to protect same. If you think about it, it would be much easier for our government to take the Arab side, given the oil situation.

To this day I cannot imagine what Truman was thinking in 1948 when he voted to support Israel as a state. All his advisors had advised against it but he did it anyway. One of his worst mistakes.

I know Israel wants the US to be its strong ally but what has Israel ever done to deserve our strong support? I can't see they've done anything helpful to the US.

Thanks for posting this wonderful post. You word things so well. I get too upset to be calm over this issue.

Like it or not, we as a civilized nation follow the law. It was not Truman who mandated Israel, it was the United Nations as a world body. Immediately, the Arab nations attacked Israel and have continued to do so. I respect everyones right to their opinions. I also respect the law. Harry Truman courageously and morally, supported the decision of the UN. In 1948 anti semitism was alive and well in spite of the horrors of WW II. And his advisors were left over from the Roosevelt regime. Go back to the history of that time and you will see that the advisors of the 30's and 40's turned back Jewish immigrants trying to escape Nazi persecution. Why does the legally mandated state of Israel have less right to protect themselves than we, or any other nation? That being said, IMO, war is stupid. I do not condone war, nor am I Jewish.

That was then and this is now.

This, in this day and age, has nothing to do with them being Jewish, for us. That area yes, or maybe.. but not for us.
Even we, as adults, let our children grow on their own. And take responiblity for their own actions. A good parent does.
We should let them fight their own battles. By signing for them to have the area (which most thought they should have gotten a piece of land in Germany, after all they were Germans) does not have us fighting for them. Especially when they are just as much fault as the others.

Respectfully, the Israelis are from all over. German, Russian, Polish, French, Romanian, Hungarian, Ethiopia, everywhere, even America. They are not all German. Then vs. now does not abrogate the legality of soverign Israel. Again, respectfully, they are not just as much at fault. Had the Arab nations not attacked, both sides would now be living in peace.

I didn't mean to infer that Jewish people were only from Germany, but the reference was made that the land should have been part of Germany because the Jews that were killed were German.

Again respectfully, the 6 million Jews killed were German, French, Polish, Danish (the smallest number) Norwegian, Itallian, Hungarian, Belgian Russian, Czechs... Jews in any country Hitler invaded were rounded up. Not just the German jews.
